Well...lesson learned, from now on I will do a gauge swatch. All was not lost with the 35mm hat, there was quite a few road blocks though. I tried some felting in the sink, but not a whole lot was happening after about 30 minutes (especially with the lighter wool) so I rounded up some blankets that needed washing and popped the hat into the wash on the hottest setting. I read on the ravelry boards that some light dyes can cause the wool to be more resistant to felting. After taking it out of the wash and seeing very little change I put it in the dryer as well. It shrank a little but not enough. I went out to Michaels (had to get some yarn for my Jayne Cobb hat anyway) and bought some elastic stuff for jewelry stringing and threaded it through the base of the hat. The elastic has improved it quite a bit. Hopefully I'll be giving it to my brother on Sunday (weather permitting).

33mm Hat
I'm knitting this hat for my film student brother. I've been meaning to make it for him since I started to learn how to knit but the double knit thing scared me till I actually tried it. He is up in Thunder Bay and its getting very cold, he tells me :P so the double knit will be excellent for him.
Its been one month and a day since I started it, I thought I finished this evening only to find it sits a little weird and its quite big. It looks pretty good as long as its not on someone's head :S
Luckily I chose to make it out of real wool I picked up a few months ago... and since I don't think I can ruin it much more, there's no time like the present to try my hand at felting. If it comes out a bit too short I'm thinking of trying some ear flaps on it.
Thus far I have put it in some warm water with a little bit of soap and agitation for a few minutes. Will wait for it to dry, and see how it is tomorrow.
